As we close in on 2012, Tanzania is experiencing the highest rate of deforestation in its recorded history. Much of this is due to the massive demand for charcoal as the primary cooking fuel for the population. As the trees disappear, the economics of supply and demand take over. Charcoal has doubled in price over the past 5 years which is ironically opening peoples eyes to environmentally sound alternatives.
This series of photographs will share with you a brillant alternative to charcoal that is being spread by an energetic group of women high in the Usambara Mountains of northern Tanzania.
