The first thing you will notice about our humble fishing guide is the shiny AK-47 in his lap. We soon found out that illegal fishing/poaching is a massive problem around the island. Poachers use nets, traps, and bottles that hang longlines below the surface. These methods target every size/age and species in the lake and indigenous fish stocks nearly disapeared. Therefor, wardens head out as both fishing guides and anti-poachers. When poachers spot the wardens, they beach their hastily crafted boat and hide in the forest while the warden captures the boat and tows it back to headquarters for a small cash reward. The poacher's boat is later burned. This routine took place like clockwork each day we went out.
