The Palace of Parliament, in Bucharest, is one of the largest structures on earth. Built during communist times, it was intended to show off the power and influence of Romania, a key community country that did not fully align with the USSR and thus between the east and the west. The building was a massive waste of resources for the struggling economy and 1/6 of the city was demolished to make way for it. Today most rooms are empty and the maintenance costs are high. There are many stories Romanians can tell about this building that dominates the Bucharest city center.
