]]>After nine days in Switzerland, we are all back safe and sound with fun stories to share. This year we enjoyed cold winter weather in Saas Fee with fresh snow daily. I hope you enjoy some of the photos and the video I made from out trip.

]]>On Saturday, November 17th, the Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam hosted a free concert featuring two rising stars in the African music scene.

From the Democratic Republic of Congo, Maryse Ngalula's powerful voice advocated for women's empowerment through the sweet sounds of blues, jazz and South African rhythm.

Elie Kamano from Guinea got the crowd moving with his Afro-reggae style mixing in political lyrics through hip-hop style. If you like Wyclef Jean, check out Elie's music.

Thank you to Alliance Française for the excellent evening.

]]>In late July I headed out to Montana for a reunion with a group I had studied wildlife ecology with, on a trip to Tanzania in 1996. We met up in Silvergate, Montana and these images share some of the scenic areas we enjoyed in and around Yellowstone National Park.

Thanks to my brother Jeff, an absolute guitar genius, for sharing your world of music with me. I felt pretty lucky to show up in Ashland and suddenly feel like part of the band.

If anyone is traveling through Ashland do yourself a huge favor and stay and extra day or two just to enjoy the live music scene. You will be blown away by the talent in this 'quiet' little town. Here's a teaser:
*Jake Ackerman (bass) opened for Ziggy Marley the other day
*Jeff Stanley (guitar) sold out a headline show at the Sydney Opera House
*Matthew Kriemelman (drums) plays in Las Vegas with The Blue Man group
*Jeff Pevar (guitar) played for Ray Charles

July'12: Guatemala EcoLena

]]>The 19 ecological zones of Guatemala are home to over 8000 plant species and 1000 diverse animals.

This remarkable range in biodiversity is being threatened by over farming and deforestation for fuel wood.

The Legacy Foundation, Fundación Progresar and The National Geographic Society, are combating deforestation in Guatemala with the introduction of biomass briquettes that burn like charcoal yet only use sustainable materials such as grass, leaves and agricultural biomass.

This set of photographs shares two of the projects in rural Guatemala (one site near Sacapulas and the second near Tacana).

The visiting team consisted of Richard Stanley (Legacy Foundation), Esvin Martin (Fundación Progresar), Joshua Vinlove (Translator), and myself (Photographer).

]]>Tanzania is a wonderfully diverse country in every way. From the nearly 80 unique languages to the national parks to the tropical beaches, this east African country would take a lifetime to capture with a camera yet I was limited to 8 images for the Bohemia Gallery and this is the result.

The image selection is printed on canvas, a common material in Tanzania, and is exaggerated in its diversity to show the range of scenes within the country.

With the three culture/people photos I tried to show the transition from traditional Maasai hearders to the youth in the city jumping into the water. However, in the end, the the image "Culture Shock" was not selected. Yet I still include it here because it is a favorite of mine as it shows an Italian bikini clad tourist flirting with a Maasai guard as Muslim fisherman return to the shore. This is a major issue in Zanzibar and on June 9th there were even small riots on the tourist island that targeted western hang outs. I obviously don't support this extreme view yet the bikinis in a conservative culture are only fueling the fire.

I've spent about 15 years of my life in Tanzania and feel a sense of joy and wonder when I walk around with my camera. Most of this website is about Tanzania so feel free to explore and let me know what you think. Asante sana for visiting. - Peter / Poa
