This image was captured in October, 2010 towards the end of the dry season when fresh snow is rarely seen and the famous glaciers are fully exposed. New studies suggest that deforestation on the coastal side of the mountain is having a devastating effect on ice loss. Without the protective forests, the humid air dries and fails to redeposit moisture as the coastal air pushes on.</p>]]></description>

This is the track that will become a major highway if the government has it's way in 2012. The highway will continue up the hills and bisect the Serengeti National Park, home to one of the greatest migrations on the planet. If the highway was built south of the Serengeti along existing roads, it would link hundreds of villages while avoiding the Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystem.</p>]]></description>
