]]>The sun rises on an ancient Adensonia digitata (Baobab tree) in Tarangire National Park. These organisms are amongst the oldest living species on our planet, capable of growing for over 2000 years. In the dry season, elephants eat the bark of this woodless tree which occasionally causes them fall in huge masses known as 'ship wrecks'.

]]>This photo was taken out of the airplane window flying from Addis Ababa to Lalibela in the north. This landscape is commonly compared the the Grand Canyon of the US except that nearly all of the land here is farmed for wheat (the yellow and green patches) and teff.
The rural photos in this series are from farmlands along a similar ridge line seen here.

]]>"UHURU" The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, known as Uhuru Point, receives the last rays of light. This image was captured in October, 2010 towards the end of the dry season when fresh snow is rarely seen and the famous glaciers are fully exposed. New studies suggest that deforestation on the coastal side of the mountain is having a devastating effect on ice loss. Without the protective forests, the humid air dries and fails to redeposit moisture as the coastal air pushes on.

]]>Driving away from the volcano Oldonyo L'Engai in the parched plains at the base of the Rift Valley. This is the track that will become a major highway if the government has it's way in 2012. The highway will continue up the hills and bisect the Serengeti National Park, home to one of the greatest migrations on the planet. If the highway was built south of the Serengeti along existing roads, it would link hundreds of villages while avoiding the Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystem.
